Poppy Seed: Prices Prevent Imports

As previously reported, the Hungarian poppy manufacturers have begun to import Czech poppy seed to cover their demand for the Easter interval. According to market information, the import quantity is not significant because of the current price situation. The Hungarian processors want to buy around a price level of 1.90 EUR DDP Hungary or somewhat under this level. They expect the price under 1.80 EUR in the near future, but the Czech suppliers do not move from 1.93-1.95 EUR/kg FCA Czech Republic.

Regarding Hungarian poppy fields, they need still precipitation. A more significant part of the drought damaged fields were resowed in the past weeks. The current hectare number is closer to the autumn ones, approximately 8000 hectares.
