In the United Kingdom (UK), there has been a shortage of tomatoes for some time, followed by a shortage of other fruits and vegetables, so retailers are limiting the quantities allowed to purchase these products.
The problem was caused by supply disruptions related to weather conditions in southern Europe and North Africa.
Fruit and vegetable growers and suppliers from Morocco have reported in recent weeks adverse conditions (low temperatures, heavy rainfall and floods) that have affected yield volumes, especially tomatoes and peppers.
Due to the poor weather, which also affected farmers in southern Spain, ferry flights were also canceled, which further exacerbated the problem.
Still, according to representatives of the retail consortium, the disruptions are expected to last for several weeks. Supermarkets are working with farmers to ensure that customers receive a wide range of fresh produce.
A spokesperson for Asda, one of the UK’s leading supermarkets, confirmed that the chain is facing supply problems with some vegetables grown in the region.
“We have introduced a temporary limit of three types of fruit and vegetables for each product, so customers will be able to purchase the products they want,” he added.
Restrictions apply when buying tomatoes, bell peppers, cucumbers, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower and raspberries.
