Energy prices will now significantly affect the sugar market. Many producers have already expired energy contracts and will now have to sign new ones at different prices or change suppliers. This can significantly increase the price of sugar. In connection with this, some alcohol will also become more expensive.

Various chains are affected by the price increase of sugar

Sugar went up in price by approximately ten crowns across various chains. Other producers who need sugar as a raw material pay several times more for it. Further price increases across the market can be assumed. Bakeries, for example, will have problems. According to Seznam Správ findings, one of them is now thinking about how to change its products so that it does not have to increase their prices sharply.

But the alcohol market is a problematic sector. Liquor companies also buy food alcohol from sugar molasses from sugar factories. According to Jiří Štětina, CEO of Mast Jägermeister CZ, the price increase should mainly concern cheap alcohol, in which more sugar is used. He expects a dramatic increase in prices for cheaper rums and vodkas. Sweet liqueurs will become more expensive by five to eight percent, according to Miroslava Motyčka, the director of the Rudolf Jelínek company, for the TN server .

Energy prices are reflected in the costs of sugar production

A number of factors are reflected in the price of sugar.  In addition to rising production costs, manufacturers are also currently dealing with emission allowances. “The Czech sugar industry, as one of the few in the food sector, is burdened with obligations related to emission permits, which cost it hundreds of millions of crowns annually,” Josef Pojer from the Czech-Moravian Sugar Association told Nova. In addition, according to him, sugar beet cannot be stored for a long time, and therefore production cannot be postponed.
