Moldova – The Sunflower Harvest, Poorer Than Ever

Spread the news!

While the” Sunflower ” promises that the oil will not get expensive until the autumn of next year, farmers are desperate and disappointed with this year’s crop. After a very dry and rainless summer, farmers in Moldova started harvesting. According to estimates, the new harvest represents only 30% of the expected one and does not cover even the investments that farmers have made. Even those who sow the fields later will not get bigger volumes, the difference between early and late sowing is only around 200 kg. According to the forecasts of the State Hydrometeorological Service, the sunflower harvest will be on average 1-1.3 tons per hectare, last year these figures were twice as high – 2.2 – 2.4 tons per hectare.

So far the harvesting is going slow as the Second Half of September was full of rains (where were these rains during the Summer).

Same as in Moldova, harvesting in Ukraine is going slow due to continuous rainfalls. As a result, the raw material prices (in MD) went up, as the imports of Ukrainian sunflower slowed. Moldova is importing Ukrainian sunflower primarily for Oil Crushing. Another major factor why prices went up is EURO depreciation. In the Republic of Moldova, the evolution of the euro is a faithful copy of the evolution of the euro against the dollar on international markets. The economy is linked to the euro at a rate of over 60 percent, exports and imports are in euros, as are remittances. Everyone involved is affected. If in the second week of September the ratio was 19.40 MDL = 1 EUR, now it is 19 MDL = 1 EUR, this automatically increased the prices of raw materials.

Currently, the Sunflower Seeds/Kernels prices are:

  • Black Sunflower Seeds for Oil crushing – 520 EUR/t EXW
  • Bakery Sunflower Kernels – 1.070 EUR/t EXW
  • Confectionery Sunflower Kernels – 1.400 EUR/t EXW
