Turkey to Increase Strait Transit Fees Five Times

Spread the news!

According to Turkish media, from October 7, Turkey plans to increase the cost of fees for the passage of merchant ships through the Bosporus and Dardanelles by five times. This will be done in accordance with the rights granted to it by the Montreux Convention (adopted in 1936). The convention restored Turkish sovereignty over the straits, the country has the right to charge for lighthouses, evacuation and medical care from ships passing through the Bosphorus and the Dardanelles.

Straits of Turkey present a shorter cargo route for big volumes of goods transferred through the regions. The passage fee hike came shortly after the straits of Turkey became the epicentre of global attention as ships carrying tonnes of Ukrainian grain sailed through them.
