ODESA: As of September 8th, Ukrainian agrarians have finished harvesting peas from 242.4 thousand hectares with an average yield of 2.35 t / ha. The preliminary estimate of the harvest is 570 thousand tons. This is 20% more than last year’s result of Ukrainian farmers.

Since the beginning of the season, purchase prices for peas in Ukraine have constantly been growing. Both yellow and green peas followed the prices for wheat and other products on domestic and foreign markets. For the moment, yellow peas purchasing prices have reached level 300 $/T and green peas – 420 $/T. Local producers are offering even higher prices, but they have higher quality requirements.

Certainly, peas prices have big pressure from Canadian forecasts and its drought-related crop cuts. At the same time, India, the main consumer of peas, will increase production by 12% from 23 to 25.72 million tons this season. With 570 thousand tons of peas, Ukraine is hardly one of the main players in this market. But Ukrainian farmers have a great possibility to take advantage of the increasing trend in the world market.
