74 percent of Iranian raisins were exported to only seven countries in 2022. The most important customers of Iranian raisins were Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Ukraine in 2022.
According to the Iran customs statistics, the total export of Iranian raisins was 106,182 tons worth 170,092,081 USD (1.60 USD per kilogram) in 2022. Of this amount, 78,485 tons worth 126,206,574 USD have been sent to Iraq, United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Russia, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, and Ukraine, which is equivalent to 74 percent by weight and 74.2 percent in terms of export value.
Iraq; the leading importer
In 2022, the main customer of Iranian raisins was Iraq importing 20,006 tons of Iranian raisins worth 32,982,830 USD (18.8 percent by weight and 19.4 percent in terms of Dollar value). The price of Iranian raisins exported by Iran to Iraq is 1.65 USD per kilogram, which is almost 3 percent more than the average price of the total amount of raisins exported by Iran.
UAE re-brand and re-export Iranian raisins
After Iraq, the United Arab Emirates imported 17,394 tons (16.4 percent in terms of weight of total export of Iranian raisins) worth 31,306,690 USD (18.4 percent of the Dollar value of the total export of Iranian raisins). Most of the raisins exported by Iran to the United Arab Emirates are of high quality.
The average price of raisins exported from Iran to this country is 1.80 USD per kilogram. The reason for this is that the United Arab Emirates is usually an intermediary country for the export of Iranian raisins to other countries due to the international sanctions on Iran. Most of the raisins exported by Iran to this country are re-exported to other countries after getting re-branded and changing the packaging. They are mainly re-exported to European countries and the United States of America. Therefore, the raisins sent to this country are of high quality, considering the final destination, which is usually Europe.
Turkey which is one of the largest raisin producer is also importing to re-export
Turkey is also a country for re-exporting Iranian raisins like the United Arab Emirates, considering that this country is one of the largest producers of raisins in the world. Almost all the raisins exported from Iran to this country are re-exported to the main destinations, which are mainly European countries. 12,735 tons of raisins (12 percent by weight of total export of Iranian raisins) worth 22,190,003 USD (13 percent of the total export of Iranian raisins) were exported from Iran to Turkey in 2022. The average price of raisins exported from Iran to Turkey is 1.74 USD per kilogram, which indicates that high-quality raisins are sent to this country.
Russia imports low quality raisins for alcoholic beverages
The fourth customer of Iranian raisins in 2022 is Russia importing 11,761 tons (11.1 percent by weight of total export) worth 17,275,270 USD (10.2 percent of the Dollar value of the total export), which means importing more than 10 percent of total Iranian exported raisins. Most of the raisins exported from Iran to Russia are of low quality and are mainly used for the production of alcoholic beverages. The average price of raisins exported from Iran to Russia is 1.47 USD per kilogram. The price of Iranian raisins has slightly increased in the domestic market of Iran compared to last month and the beginning of 2023. However, the cost of this product has decreased by 13 to 16 percent in the world markets due to the increase in the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial. The foreign exchange rates have risen in the Iranian market due to increase sanctions on Iran and decreasing hopes for the revival of the JCPOA nuclear agreement.
