Dried Figs: An Increase in Iranian Fig Exports in November 2021

Spread the news!

The export of Iranian dried figs was 2,432 tons in November of this year, which has decreased by more than 45 per cent compared to the same period last year. The most important reason for the decline in exports this month is this year’s summer drought, which has reduced production and the quality of figs.

Last month (November 2021), 2.432 tons of dried figs worth 7.316.000 USD were exported from Iran. Exports of Iranian dried figs have increased by about 20 per cent in November this year compared to October, which was 2.019 tons worth 6.038.000 USD. The reason for the increase in exports in November this year is the rise in demand due to the Christmas and New Year holidays, as well as the Chinese New Year in February 2022.

During the same period last year (November 2020), 4.482 tons of figs worth 13,380,000 USD were exported from Iran. In November this year, the export of this crop has decreased by about 45 per cent compared to the same period last year. The most important reason for the decrease in the export of Iranian figs in November of this year is the decline in production and the quality of the produced product. This summer drought and weather stress in spring caused a lot of damage to fig orchards in different parts of Iran, especially Estahban in Fars province. These damages reduced the amount of production and the quality of figs produced in these orchards.

The export of figs has been 12.393 tons worth 36.986.000 USD in the first 11 months (January to November 2021). The average price of Iranian figs for export has been 2,98 USD per kilogram during this period. Exports in the 11 months of 2021 have increased by about 8,5 per cent compared to the same period last year, which was 11.398 tons worth 34.104.000 USD. China has been the most important destination for Iranian figs during this period, directly and indirectly (through intermediary countries such as Vietnam, Singapore, etc.)

The price of Iranian figs has increased by 10 to 15 per cent in international markets compared to last month. The rise in domestic and export demand has been the most important reason for the increase in the price of dried figs exported from Iran. The growth in domestic demand was due to the traditional Yalda night ritual on the last night of autumn. The increase in export demand was due to Christmas and New Year. As mentioned, China is the most critical customer of Iranian dried figs for export, and the Chinese New Year will come in less than two months. Therefore, the demand for dried figs produced in Iran has increased by this country. This has also led to a rise in the price of this product in global markets over the past month.
