Almond; Why Are Iran’s Almond and Almond Kernel Exports Falling?

The export rate of Iranian almonds and almond kernels has fallen by more than 50 percent in the first three months of this year compared to the same period in 2021.

According to Iran customs statistics, 600 tons of almonds and almond kernels worth 4.032.000 USD were exported from Iran from January to March 2022. Of this number, 426 tons worth 3.729.000 USD were allocated to the export of Iranian almonds and almond kernels. In terms of weight, almond kernels have a share of 71 percent and a share of 92,5 percent of the total export of Iranian almonds. The average price of Iranian almond kernels for export is 8,75 USD per kilogram. 174 tons of shelled almonds worth 303.000 USD were exported from Iran. The average price of Iranian shelled almonds for export is 1.74 USD per kilogram.

The export rate of Iranian mentioned crops is reduced to half in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year. In the first three months of last year, 1.198 tons of almonds and almond kernels worth 10.518.000 USD were exported from Iran. The export rate of almonds and almond kernels has decreased by about 62 percent in terms of export value and by about 50 percent in terms of weight in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year.

The most significant reason for reducing the export rate of Iranian almonds and almond kernels in the first three months of this year is decreasing the number of available products as well as the reduction in the quality of available crops compared to the same time last year. The production and supply of Iranian almonds and almond kernels have declined this year due to the summer drought, which has led to a decrease in the export rate. The drought also caused a lot of damage to the product and decreased its quality compared to the past years. The quality reduction declined the demand for Iranian almonds and almond kernels. This issue has dropped in the export of these products in the first three months of this year compared to last year.

The price of Iranian almonds and almond kernels has risen in global markets compared to the past month. During the last month, the cost of these products has gone up in the first two weeks of the mentioned period. During the past two weeks, the price of these products remained stable in the domestic and international markets. In the first two weeks of this period, domestic demand for buying almonds and almond kernels has increased due to the Persian New Year holidays, which raised the price of these products. Compared to last month, the cost of almonds and almond kernels has increased by 4 to 6,5 percent in global markets.
