Almond Market Defies Expectations: Resilience in the Face of Surplus

Spread the news!

The almond kernel market is resilient, showing no signs of a downturn, despite a significant increase in California’s production and a large stockpile in Indian markets. Against expectations of a slump, conditions point to a possible rise in almond kernel prices.

The peak production period in the USA is August, and this year has seen a substantial increase in California. Exporters there are actively selling, while the Indian almond market experiences a buyer shortage, leading to slow business. California’s production has soared to about 2350 million pounds, up from 2150 million pounds last year. The price per pound of almond kernels has risen from USD 1,58 (€1,44) to USD 1,70 (€1,54).

Importers continue to buy almond kernels despite the price increase. In key Indian cities, the stock of independent kernels is limited. Importers had previously stockpiled goods at lower prices, but supply isn’t keeping up. Currently, the price of Almond California kernel in India is around USD 7,82/7,88 (€7,15/7,21) per kg. Independent kernels sell for USD 6,86/6,92 (€6,27/6,33) per kg.

Recently, the availability of shipping containers was lower than last month. With the wedding season’s onset, demand is increasing, but the supply of containers is expected to be disrupted due to congestion and market closures. Further, disruptions in the Red Sea are likely to impact future container availability, suggesting a bullish trend in California almond prices.

In California, current booking rates are higher than last year by 0.55, but with both new and old kernel stocks being reduced in the market, there’s no indication of a downward trend. The market is expected to rise further around Vasant Panchami and Holi. Traders who were stuck with high-priced goods have managed to settle their stocks, indicating a stable and risk-free trading environment for almond kernels at current prices.
