Bird Flu Alert in Brazil

Spread the news!

Following cases of bird flu in Brazil, an animal health emergency has been declared in the country.

According to the BBC, Brazilian Agriculture Minister Carlos Favaro announced that a 6-month animal health emergency has been declared in the country after a large number of bird flu cases detected in wild birds, especially in the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro.

Ministry of Agriculture officials noted that the cases were seen far away from production areas in southern Brazil.

Brazil, which ranks first in the world with annual chicken meat exports of about 10 billion dollars, is worried about the loss of exports due to both animal culling and trade restrictions from other countries if the disease spreads to “commercial animals”.

The world has been experiencing its worst bird flu outbreak since October 2021, with the pandemic killing more wild birds than ever before. Some species of mammals are also reported to have been infected.
