Import of Black Gram Split is in advance stage
The country may have to import approx. 0.7 Million Tonnes of Black Gram Split (Urad Daal). This certainly depends on the demand for Black Gram Split to stay in the local market! Generally, out of total imports, 74% Urad is being imported from Myanmar.
“The agro-climatic condition in Brazil is suitable for producing Black Gram Split. We are seriously exploring imports of Urad from Brazil. The talks are in an advanced stage” – said Rohit Kumar Singh, Secretary of Consumer Affairs. This may boost the domestic supply and keep we can keep prices under control.
Exporters from Myanmar are warned
About 0.2 Million Tonnes of Black Gram Split has been imported from Myanmar till now in the current fiscal year, he said. In view to reduce the dependency on Myanmar, India is exploring other sources to import Black Gram Split. Lately, to save the domestic supply interest, the exporters are warned by the consumer affairs department of pulses from Myanmar against hoarding the commodity.
Expected production of Black Gram Split is less
In the current fiscal year 2022-2023, the estimated production volume of Black Gram Split is slightly low in the South Asian country of India. The Agriculture Ministry has estimated Black Gram Split production at 2.68 Million Tonnes. The previous year it was 2.77 Million Tonnes. The production volume is decreasing considerably since the financial year 2018.
Domestic happening on high prices due to stock holding by millers & traders
Rohit Kumar Singh revised the status of stock disclosure of “Black Gram Split” & “Pigeon pea” with major pulses-producing and consuming states in regards with rising prices of pulses in the country in the previous month. They have warned hoarders of action and not only this, top officials of the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, visited ten different places across four states in the last few days to examine the stock disclosure status.
Further, the department also found out that millers and traders/dealers have resorted to holding their stocks in warehouses in the name of farmers in a deliberate attempt to escape stock declaration.
