EU Countries Are Increasing Exports of Agricultural Products to China

Citing data from the European Commission, grain shipments from the EU to China more than doubled in 2023, soaring from 2.53 mln tonnes to 5.34 mln tonnes. This marks the highest figure recorded in the past 9 years, second only to the record-breaking year of 2021 when grain exports from the EU to China peaked at 5.63 mln tonnes.

Barley accounted for the largest share in the structure of grain exports from the EU to China last year – 72%. Compared to 2022, its deliveries increased 4.6 times to 3.82 mln tonnes.

A remarkable surge in corn exports was also observed (increased by 4.7 times to 692.000 tonnes).

However, wheat exports from the EU to China decreased by 47% to 824.000 tonnes.

The export of oilseeds and byproducts from the EU to China in 2023 increased by 35% to 0.8 mln tonnes (0.59 mln tonnes in 2022).

At the same time, sunflower meal accounted for 67% of the supply structure. Its exports increased by 6% to 537.8 thsd tonnes.

Deliveries of rapeseed oil from the EU to the People’s Republic of China saw the most notable increase, nearly quadrupling to 112.6 thousand tonnes, while sunflower seed shipments surged to 107.6 thousand tonnes. These products now constitute 14% of the export structure within this segment.
