Türkiye’s Agricultural Chambers Union (TZOB) reveals alarming annual food inflation of 97%

According to data from the Türkiye’s Agricultural Chambers Union (TZOB), the annual food inflation has surged to 97%, marking a record high. Among the top 10 food items witnessing the highest price hikes in the past year, hazelnuts stand out prominently.

TZOB’s report highlights a significant surge in food prices over the past year, with several commodities experiencing substantial increases. Dry figs, olive oil, dried apricots, spinach, lettuce, lamb meat, hazelnuts, bell peppers, green onions, and apples are among the most affected food items.

The price of dry figs soared by 228%, olive oil by 171%, dried apricots by 151%, spinach and lettuce by 140%, lamb meat by 137%, hazelnuts by 126%, bell peppers by 124%, green onions by 112%, and apples by 110%.

In January 2023, one kilogram of hazelnuts was sold for 55 Turkish Lira (€1,56in) Ordu, while as of March 17, 2024, the price has skyrocketed to 120 Turkish Lira (€3,41)in the free market, as per TZOB’s report.

This substantial increase in hazelnut prices underscores the challenges faced by consumers and the impact of inflation on the agricultural sector in Türkiye.
