Latvia intends to discuss with the ministers of agriculture of the European Union the ban on the import of Russian agricultural products to the EU and their possible replacement with Ukrainian ones. Latvian Agriculture Minister Armands Krause stated this before the meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Brussels on January 23, Interfax-Ukraine reports.

The minister noted that in 2014, when Russia imposed a unilateral embargo on a number of European products, the EU did not take any restrictive measures in response.

Currently, imports from the Russian Federation are increasing. Cereals may even be stolen in Ukraine. We don’t know where this product comes from. In light of these concerns, we propose initiating a discussion on minimizing food trade with Russia to the extent permitted by sanctions” – A. Krause explained his position and added that Latvia will ask to create a working group on the introduction of a ban on the import of Russian food products at the European Commission.

He also informed that Lithuania and Estonia support the initiative to limit grain imports from the Russian Federation by the European Union.

Actually, we don’t need food imports in Europe. And if there are any groups of goods that are in short supply, such as sunflower oil, then there is a producer – a very large Ukraine. We can buy all food products that we import from Russia in Ukraine. We will be able to replace them and provide an opportunity to help the government of Ukraine finance this war against Russian aggression,” A. Krause summarized.
