Fars province, having the most extensive rainfed fig orchards in the world in the Estahban region and producing 90 per cent of rainfed figs in Iran, has the highest share in the production and export of this dried fruit. Ninety per cent of Iran’s fig exports are to China.
With 80 per cent of the area under cultivation of Iranian rainfed figs, Fars province produces 90 per cent of Iranian rainfed figs. This year, 37.600 tons of rainfed figs were harvested from these orchards in Fars province, especially the largest rainfed figs in the world, in the city of Estahban, and sent to the domestic and foreign markets. Rainfed figs from Fars, especially Estahban, which is world-famous, have 99 per cent of the country’s fig export basket.
At present, 90% of Iranian figs are exported to China. The Iranian fig market outside Iran is excellent, especially in China. Adherence to the standards of the target countries is a condition for survival and continuity in the target markets. These conditions require exporters to have an identity card, manufacturing license, health license, and other standard requirements. The entry of non-specialists and the lack of standard conditions for export, which has entered many people to this field without any principled investment, has become a threat point for this world-famous product. Issuance of identity cards based on standard and health and legal conditions for real exporters, instability in export laws, and excessive use of agricultural pesticides, although less commonly used in figs, are major challenges in fig exports.
The imposition of stricter restrictions on importing Iranian figs to China from the beginning of 2022 is one of the deterrent conditions for many Iranian exporters, especially those who have entered the market without proper investment.
The price of Iranian dried figs for export in world markets has increased compared to last month due to increased export demand for this product. The main increase was in demand from China due to the beginning of the Chinese New Year. Compared to last month, the price of Iranian dried figs for export in world markets has increased by 2 to 3 per cent.
