Spice Exports Are Down 13 %, and Earnings Have Improved

Volume exports of various spices from the country declined by 13% in the first seven months of the current financial year. However, there was a marginal improvement of 1% in income during this period. This information was given in the latest data released by the Spices Board.

Garlic

In April-October, 2022, the export of garlic jumped 170% quantitatively. Thus, figures show that there has been a jump of 44 % in the export earnings of garlic during this period.

Fenugreek

In its latest figures, the board has informed that in the April-October period of the financial year 2022-23, a total of 23,988 tonnes of fenugreek was exported from the country. A year ago, a total quantity of 19,251 tonnes was shipped in the period under review. These figures show that this time there has been an increase of 25% in quantitative exports and 16% in earnings of fenugreek.

Dry Ginger

In the first seven months of the current financial year 2022-23, the quantitative export of dry ginger from the country fell by 63% to 30,527 tonnes. Thus, its export earnings also declined by 49%. In the last financial year, its quantity was exported 82,395 tonnes. In the first seven months of the current financial year, 13,226 tonnes of fennel have been shipped from the country. It is clear that this time till now, there has been a decline of 53% in the quantitative export of fennel and 33% in income.

Other Commodities

Apart from these, there has been a decrease of 22% in the export of red chilli, 19% in the export of cumin, 9% in the export of small cardamom, 4% in large cardamom and 3% in the export of black pepper.

Thus the spice exports have decreased, but there has been an improvement in income on a qualitative basis.
