Volgograd Region Plans to Harvest at Least 1 Million Tons of Sunflower

Volgograd is one of Russia’s oldest cities and an important industrial centre with just over a million inhabitants. It has a strategic location to the South of Moscow and is often known as the ‘window to Russia, due to it being a short distance away from Georgia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.

The Volgograd region intends to harvest at least 1 million tons of sunflower seeds in 2022, the regional committee of agriculture told Interfax .

“The areas under sunflower in 2022 remain at the level of last year and amount to 740 thousand hectares. In 2021, more than 1.1 million tons of oilseeds were collected, this year we plan to collect the same – about 1 million tons, ”said the employee of the department.

He noted that to date, farmers from 11 districts have started harvesting oilseeds with a total wedge of 311.9 thousand hectares, which is 42% of the total crops. The leaders in terms of the area included Mikhailovka (62.6 thousand ha), Novoanninsky (60.7 thousand ha), Elansky (61.2 thousand ha), Uryupinsky (59.46 thousand ha), Novonikolaevsky (58, 16 thousand ha) districts.

According to the committee, up to 90% of the grown oilseeds are processed in the region. The Volgograd region is one of the leading producers of vegetable oil in the country, producing about 6% of the total Russian volume. Thus, Cargill Novoanninsky LLC annually produces up to 300 thousand tons of sunflower oil, and the OJSC Uryupinsk Oil Extraction Plant – up to 150 thousand tons.
