Thirty percent of produced barberry was processed in South Khorasan last year. 95 to 98 percent of the seedless barberry of the world is produced in South Khorasan. Most of the produced barberry should be converted into a secondary product with the development of processing industries to increase its exports to the worldwide markets. Barberry is a valuable and strategic product. It is unknown to the world markets, and even in Iran, that is the main weakness.

Last year, 22.000 tons of dried barberry were produced in South Khorasan, and about 6.000 tons of it (30 percent) were used in the processing industry. The cities of South Khorasan, which are the centers of barberry production, have become non-marketing factories without any particular investment. Barberry shrubs have resisted as a unique product with economic advantage, despite two decades of drought and water stress. However, some factors have made the situation difficult, including lack of attention to the correct principles of gardening and pruning, proper fertilization and nutrition, modern irrigation methods, proper and hygienic methods of barberry drying, lack of coherence in packaging, design, branding, and the terms of sale with value-added in the market.

There are other problems in the producer cities, especially in South Khorasan province, including lack of processing chain improvement, such as special agricultural refrigerators, selling fresh fruit broadly with fine packaging to the large cities as well as other countries, lack of complete processing factory to maintain and convert surplus production and maintain its added value, and the lack of a coherent and powerful financial organization which can undertake the responsibilities of buying, branding, and selling in Iran and the world.

There are eight barberry processing units in South Khorasan with a capacity of about 5.000 tons. Of the 6.000 tons of barberry in these processing units, about 1.500 tons are converted to secondary crops, such as barberry juice, barberry syrup, expressed juice, jam, and barberry fruit leather. Also, 3,500 tons of last year’s barberry were packaged in twenty-seven units of South Khorasan to enter the market. There are eight Barberry processing units in South Khorasan. Of this number, five units are in Qaenat city, one section is in Birjand, one unit is in Darmiyan, and one unit is in Zirkuh county.

Coherent planning and support for domestic and foreign investors are needed to reduce barberry export processing and marketing problems.

The price of Iranian barberry for export has reduced over the past month. There are two factors for the price reduction of this export product compared to last month. The first factor is decreasing the export demand and increasing supply toward demand and the second factor is the rising foreign exchange rate against rials over the past week. Compared to last month, the price of Iranian Sun-dried barberry for export has fallen by about 3 percent. Also, the cost of Iranian Puffed-barberry for export has declined by about 11 percent compared to last month due to the high market supply and increased market inventory.
