Cumin is one of the most important medicinal plants in Iran that needs a low amount of water. Sabzevar and Khoshab are the main cities that produce this crop in Khorasan Razavi province. Some factors encourage farmers to cultivate this crop. Including the short growing season, less need for water, employment, and suitable price.

Cumin is one of the most influential medicinal plants in Iran and is known as green gold because of its importance of medicinal and therapeutic and its role in importing currency. 70 percent of cumin cultivate rain-fed. The use of cumin in medicine production shows its value in health and treatment. Therefore, it has been welcomed by farmers in many provinces and has imported a large amount of money.

Khorasan Razavi is the main area under cultivation in Iran. Sabzevar city is the center of cumin production in the province. The cultivation of this plant is affordable in Sabzevar due to the lack of water for optimal use of water capacity, as well as less water requirement. This year, 800 tons of cumin were harvested from 1,400 hectares in the city. Cumin production in Sabzevar is evaluated as acceptable this year due to the decline in rainfall. It is essential to create the value-added of this product and a complete chain for processing in Sabzevar. If this is the case, various job opportunities will be created in this city.

Another important city of cumin production is Khoshab city in Khorasan Razavi province. Khoshab city is one of the centers of cumin production in the province. Cumin cultivation is of great importance in Khoshab city due to the weather and climatic conditions, and there is a proper revenue for producers and beneficiaries because of its medicinal properties. Cumin harvest began in early June and continues until early July. There are advantages for planting green cumin including the low need for water, resistance to salinity and pests, short growth period, and appropriate income. This year, 305 tons of green cumin have been harvested from the cultivated area of 1,100 hectares in Khoshab. The harvest level and production have decreased per unit due to the damage done to the farms caused by rain and hail.

Last month, the cost of foreign currencies increased in the Iranian market. This increase in the foreign exchange rates against the rials has reduced the price of this product in world markets due to the stable price of green and black cumin in Iran’s domestic market over the past month.
