Sarayan County has the largest area under green cumin cultivation, with 1,400 hectares in South Khorasan province. Harvesting of green cumin starts in this city’s fields. More than 800 tons of green cumin are expected to be harvested from the cumin cultivation areas in this city.

The green cumin harvesting begins in cumin cultivation areas in Iran, especially in Khorasan Razavi and South Khorasan provinces, in the early August. This year, harvesting of 800 tons of green cumin in Sarayan is expected, which is the center of cumin production in South Khorasan.

According to the Agricultural Organization of Sarayan, 1,400 hectares of agricultural lands are under green cumin cultivation in the current cropping year. On average, 600 kg of cumin is expected to be harvested per hectare due to the proper soil moisture storage and the capability of the city’s farmers. There are some factors in willing of farmers to plant and produce green cumin in Sarayan, including the short period of growth, farmers’ information and their indigenous knowledge,

Scientific training courses, and experts’ cooperation in education. Sarayan has the largest area under green cumin cultivation, with 1,400 hectares in South Khorasan province. In Sarayan, the area under cultivation of this crop is managed by 1,460 beneficiaries of the agricultural section. Preliminary measures take actions in this city to issue a license to establish a unit of sifting and cleaning cumin to complete the production chain and increase the value-added of the product.

This plant has a lot of export value because of the high global demand. The green cumin produced in the city has a higher quality and active ingredients than in other parts of Iran due to the dry and warm conditions. One of the advantages of planting green cumin in arid regions is low water demand.

If cumin cultivates in the autumn, rainfalls will answer to the needs of this plant for water. One or two supplementary irrigation can help to have acceptable crop harvesting.

Over the past month, as the cumin harvest season approached, the price of this product was stable in the Iranian domestic market, despite the sharp decline in cumin inventory in the market. Thus, the cost of all kinds of cumin was affected by changes in foreign currency prices in foreign markets. The cost of Iranian cumin for export has decreased by about 6.3 to 6.7 percent in world markets due to an increase in the foreign exchange rates against Rial over the past month.
